Tech Topic Connection: Database Management

What is Database Management?

"Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical devices, infrastructure and processes to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data (Castagna & Bigelow, 2021)".

Data has become an asset for organizations and it is important for the data that is being stored remain private, secure, and organized - especially when an organization is dealing with very large data. Data is collected using modern software applications and databases are a common way to store and manage data using such applications. Organizations uses database applications to create and administer databases. Database Management Systems (DBMS) are desktop applications that users use for business purpose. The purpose of database management systems is to store and transform data into information to support businesses decision making. Database management systems are in relation to the fundamentals of information technology as they are used to store, retrieve, and run queries on data. DBMS allows users to create, read, update, and delete data in the database. One of the components of a DBMS is the hardware which is the actual computer system used for storing and accessing the database. It consist of secondary storage devices such as hard disks. DBMS backs up the data regularly and recover data if a problem occurs. Most databases have built-in backup and recovery tools. Database administrators use a programming language called structured query language (SQL) to manage databases and query data. Network architecture influences database management by using client/server network. Very large databases are stored on the server, and the client accesses these without copying them onto the local hard drive (Client/Server and Mainframe Systems Used in Telecommunication Systems, 2013). An advantage of Database Management Systems, they are used to increase data security.

What is the difference between PostgreSQL and MySQL?

There are number of different types of database management systems (DBMS). DBMS has five models: flat file, hierarchical, network, relational, and object-relational. Today, I will be going over two models in relation to what is the difference between PostgreSQL and MySQL. Although, both PostgreSQL, also known as Postgres, and MySQL rely on the programming language SQL. Postgres is essentially an object-relational DMBS, while MySQL is a relational DBMS. Postgres is the most advance database management system and MySQL is the most popular. MySQL is a common and easy-to-start database with low memory, disk and CPU utilization, managed by a relational database management system (RDMS) (PostgreSQL vs. mysql: What's the difference?). Moreover, Postgres has a deep language support as it can support multiple languages like Python, Java, JavaScript, C/C++ and Ruby. Overall, I have learned that in order for an organization to use one of the two, it just all depends on their enterprises objectives and resources.
